A Game-changing innovation from Finland: Advanced emulsion process combined with the best lubricating hot wax on the market.

In a joint R&D project together with Helsinki University, Rex has successfully transformed the record-breaking Black Diamond hot wax into a liquid form. With the new Rex Black Magik drip wax, you get the benefits of hot wax application—such as extreme cleanliness, low friction, and effective wear protection—combined with the ease of use of bottle-applied lubes. Black Magik is generous in use, and its composition fully matches the 11+1 wax block blend of Black Diamond. Black Diamond Hot wax has been tested to be a leading chain hot wax on the market, both in dry and especially in wet conditions.

The First Fully Uncompromised Liquid Wax

Drip waxes are typically soft and oily compared to hot waxes. But that's not the case with Black Magic. Black Magic is the market’s first fully uncompromising liquid wax, matching the composition of hot wax exactly. Its completely non-oily formula was developed in collaboration with Helsinki University researchers specializing in emulsion technology. The advanced emulsion process transforms the wax into extremely fine micro-droplets. Once the water carrier evaporates, only genuine Rex wax remains. You’ll notice Black Magik’s similarity with hot wax as it stiffens the chain after lubrication, almost like hot wax. During a short run-in period, the chain breaks in, and excess wax sheds from the surface. The internal and external pressures exerted on the waxed chain compress the wax droplets into a solid state, resembling molten wax. The result is long-lasting lubrication that surpasses the durability and dirt-repellency of traditional emulsion waxes. Black Magik is manufactured at our factory in Hartola, Finland, using an advanced in-house manufacturing process.

The Perfect Complement to Hot Wax – Also Excellent on Its Own

Black Magik is the perfect and 100% compatible complement to Rex Black Diamond hot wax, and it performs just as well when used on its own. Unlike most competing emulsion waxes, Black Magik is identical in composition to hot wax. It doesn’t collect dirt or accumulate in the derailleur pulleys and jockey wheels.

The concept is familiar from our ski waxes: Hot wax and liquid wax are fully equivalent, with the only differences lying in the application method.

Easy to apply

Used on its own: Switch gears to cross-chaining position. This helps in open the small gaps between plates and rollers, and lets the wax penetrate the chain better. Apply generously to a clean chain, rotate until the wax penetrates the chain, and let it dry overnight.

As a hot wax complement: Wipe the chain with a cloth, apply Black Magik generously, and let it dry overnight. Apply the wax in cross-chaining position. This helps in open the small gaps between plates and rollers, and lets the wax penetrate the chain better.

  • If you have previously used traditional chain lubes, you will get the best experience by first cleaning the chains thoroughly with a solvent cleaner such as Rex Chain Cleaner. A good cleaning improves the adhesion of the wax and enhances the durability of the lubrication.
  • A thorough cleaning is not absolutely required  if you have used Rex wax lubes like Domestique, Arctic or Black Diamond previously. It is still recommended.
  • If the chain has been previously treated with hot wax, a simple surface wipe will suffice.
  • The factory grease on new chains must be removed before applying the liquid wax.

How long does one application last?

The duration of a single application depends heavily on conditions. In dry weather, the lubrication can last for several hundred kilometers. In wet conditions, the lubrication duration shortens significantly. We recommend wiping the chain and reapplying lubrication after every wet ride. This also helps avoid surface rust, which is typical for dry chain waxes.

How should chains be cleaned before re-lubrication?

At a minimum, simply wipe the chain with a cloth. Chains treated with Black Magik Drip Wax hardly collect any dirt at all. For very dirty chains, you can rinse them with water or wash them with a mild biodegradable detergent like Rex Bicycle Wash. Solvent cleaning is not necessary. After washing, apply a new layer of liquid wax and let it dry as instructed for at least 12 hours.

Is hot waxing still needed?

Not necessarily. Black Magik Drip Wax works extremely well as a standalone lubricant. However, occasionally using hot wax is still a good idea, as every hot waxing also serves as a deep cleaning for the chain. Immersing and agitating the chain in hot wax removes all the dirt and dust that has accumulated in the chain. This situation is similar to using hot wax and liquid waxes for ski bases. Liquid waxes work fine, but occasional hot waxing is recommended.

Can I use Rex “wet” chain lubes for lubrication occasionally?

After switching to emulsion wax, it’s best to stick exclusively to it and hot wax. Using oil-containing products occasionally increases dirt buildup and may reduce the durability of subsequent Black Magik Drip Wax applications.

How is Black Magik Drip Wax used as a top-up lubricant between hot waxing sessions?

Our recommended method is to hot wax for example every 1,000 kilometers, and add emulsion wax every 100–500 kilometers. When combined with cycling through multiple chains, this lubrication method means the wax pot needs to be heated very rarely.

Can I use it in wet conditions?

Yes. The innovative emulsifying process used in Black Magik is especially designed to maximize water resistance and resist washing away by water. The dried wax is very water resistant. After riding in wet conditions, always wipe the chain and apply more Black Magik. Otherwise surface rust can appear.

Where does the name come from?

We think it’s like magic how we were able to turn our solid waxing into an easily applicable liquid version, with minimal compromises. We also wanted to avoid confusion with too many versions with “Black Diamond” name.

Does it contain PFAS or other chemicals?

No.
